Canon PowerShot A 200
Tag:CanonPowerShotA200 | Canon PowerShot A 200Canon cut some corners to get this camera down to $199, and it shows: The A200 trades an optical zoom for a less-desirable 4X digital zoom and ships with a meager 8MB CompactFlash card.
Though relatively light and compact, the A200's design feels clunky. The gray rubber buttons that litter the back of the camera--ten in all--can be hard to press and may overwhelm beginners. Four buttons labeled with less-than-intuitive icons control the flash, white balance, photo effects, EV exposure compensation, continuous shooting mode, self-timer, and macro and landscape modes. Additional buttons control the on-screen display, menu display, delete options, playback mode, and zoom.
Running on two AA alkaline batteries, the camera returned the shortest battery life of all 16 cameras tested in our roundup, recording only 61 shots before running out of juice. And though the camera produced reasonably sharp printed photos, on-screen images garnered our lowest rating because they were dark, fuzzy, and had a distinctly red cast.
Although its lens has a fixed f2.8 aperture, the A200's maximum shutter speed is 1/2000 of a second--quite fast for such an inexpensive camera and great for taking action shots in bright light. The camera's five nifty photo-effects settings include vivid (which increases the saturation), neutral, low sharpening, sepia, and black-and-white. A handy direct print function lets users easily send images from the camera straight to a compatible Canon printer via USB.
