Taking quality pictures is difficult enough without having the added inconvenience of darkness. When the sun goes down it means that photographers must deal with flashes, shutter speeds, and who knows what else. For an amateur this can really boggle the mind and make you want to throw in the towel. However, throwing in the towel is not the solution when moments that must be frozen in time occur. So the only thing you can really do about it is to learn some tricks of the trade.

First in order to capture all of the colors of the night, you need to adjust your shutter speed. The shutter speed should be a slower one in order to allow the sensor to absorb all the light that is available. However, one of the pitfalls of a slower shutter speed is "noise". Noise from a slower shutter speed is due to the overheating of the sensor. The longer the shutter is open, the more it has to work and therefore the shutter will heat up. To fix the noise problem, adjust the camera's ISO. The ISO should be at the lowest setting which is usually around 100. Some cameras may come with a noise reduction feature. If your camera has this function, then be sure to turn it on as well. Furthermore, if you are shooting pictures on a cool night then the noise may also be reduced since the environment will not add any extra heat. When it comes to adjusting your exposure speed, it is recommended that you do so by trial and error. Begin with a one second exposure speed,

take a picture, and then see how it looks. From there you can adjust the exposure speed to obtain the perfect picture.

The flash is not necessary at night. It really is only meant for subjects that are about 10-15 feet away and even then it is optional. If you are trying to photograph a building or other large subject, then use the light that is provided via street lights and use a longer exposure speed. In order to get the best light on your subject, position yourself so that whatever light is available is hitting the subject. If you do want to capture a subject that is close, such as a person, you may use the flash but leave the exposure open for a long period of time so that the camera can capture the background as well.

When attempting to photograph a still subject such as building using a tripod will help ensure against blurry images that could occur as a result of a shaky hand. If you do not have a tripod or are taking a picture of a moving subject, try keeping your hand as steady as possible. No matter whether your subject is still or not, you'll need to take more than one picture. Your odds of a great picture will increase with the number of pictures you take.

You will also need to read the camera's manual. There are so many camera models available and therefore there are too many features to adequately describe in one article. Whatever features your camera may have, take the time to read about them and practice with them. Finally, practice makes perfect. The more you practice your picture taking skills at night, the more familiar you'll become with it and your camera. You'll learn little tricks about your camera as well as tricks to taking pictures.
